All About the Rainbow Mountains in Peru

Planning a trip to Peru can be overwhelming due to the abundance of amazing places to explore. Choosing activities and excursions can become a challenge. However, in recent years, the different “rainbow mountains” have stood out as must-see destinations for both residents and visitors.

The growing popularity of these rainbow mountains in Peru is due to their unique formations of hues that make them look like authentic rainbows in the middle of the majestic Peruvian Andes. These vibrant hues and shades are the result of natural minerals found in the earth, such as sulfur, calcium, and quartz.

Any of these exciting excursions will allow you to immerse yourself in dazzling landscapes and breathe the pure air of the Andes. Best of all, all of these experiences can be enjoyed on a day trip from the city of Cusco. This makes them ideal options to fit into any travel itinerary and make the most of your visit to this land of natural wonders.

In this blog, we offer you detailed information about the various rainbow mountains that beautify Peru. Our mission is to help you choose the one that best suits your preferences and desires for adventure. So let’s start exploring these unique natural gems together!

How many colored mountains are there in Peru?

If you are one of the many travelers who arrive in Cusco, you have probably been amazed by the endless things to see that this area offers. Maybe you don't yet know all the natural treasures, especially the amazing Colored Mountains. When looking at the tours you can take, it's common to find different names and paths, which can be a bit confusing.

The truth is that Cusco and the areas around it have different natural formations with impressive colors. Known as Colored Mountains, these views were made by minerals like iron, copper, and sulfur rusting. This made bright patterns that go from strong reds and oranges to bright blues and greens.

In the Cusco area, three colored mountains stand out. Each one has its own special history of how it was formed. They have become real tourist icons and attract visitors from all over the world. Discover these three wonders:

  1. Vinicunca Mountain (Mountain of 7 Colors)
Also known as Rainbow Mountain, it is the most famous of all. Its stripes of red, yellow, green, and blue colors make it a must-see place for adventurers. It is located at 5,200 meters above sea level, in the Cusco region, and its beauty has made it one of the most photographed mountains in the world.
  2. Palccoyo Mountain
Known as the "younger sister" of Vinicunca, this mountain offers an easier option, but just as amazing. Instead of just one colorful mountain, here you can see three rainbow mountains and an impressive stone forest. It is easier to get to, so it is great for those who prefer a less hard walk.
  3. Pallay Punchu Mountain
Nicknamed the "Sharp Mountain" because of its sharp peaks and its strong red and brown colors, it is the least known, but definitely one of the most striking. Located in the Canas province, its shape looks like an Andean poncho and its more recent opening makes it the perfect place for those who want a real adventure with fewer tourists.

These Colored Mountains are not only nice to look at, but they also have their own story and are part of the big cultural variety of the Andes. Which of these wonders would you like to explore first?

Colored Mountain or Vinicunca

The Mountain of 7 Colors, better known as Vinicunca or the Rainbow Mountain, is one of the most amazing and mysterious places in Peru. This spectacular natural monument not only amazes with its fascinating mix of colors, but also with the adventure and exciting walk you take to discover it.

Where is the Rainbow Mountain Peru located?

Located in the Cusco region, Vinicunca stands at a height of about 5,200 meters above sea level in the Vilcanota Mountain Range. Its far-away location makes it a special place for adventurers who travel from Cusco, either by private or shared transport, followed by a walk through mountain paths. This journey through tough scenery adds an extra bit of adventure when you arrive at a place that amazes with its landscape.

Characteristics of the Rainbow Mountain

The most striking thing about this mountain is the fascinating range of colors that go from red and green tones to blue and yellow. All these colors are due to the presence of minerals and dirt that have built up over centuries in this region.
Getting to the top where Rainbow Mountain is located means a walk that winds through amazing Andean landscapes. What's more, along the way you can enjoy the wide views, surrounding mountains, and plains.

Things about it:

  • Altitude: 5,200 meters above sea level, which means the trip is also a way to get used to the high place and a physical challenge.
  • How it was made: Layers of rock put together in a complicated way, the result of natural changes over many years.
  • The walk: The walk to Vinicunca is not too easy and not too hard, but the view from the top makes every step worth it.
  • Cultural value: For the people of the Andes, this mountain is not just a place for tourists, but also a holy site that shows the link between the land and God.

What is the Best Time to Go to the Mountain of 7 Colors?

The dry season, from May to September, is the best time to visit Vinicunca. During these months, clear skies let you see how strong the colors are, and it's also easier to walk without big weather problems. It's a good idea to start your trip early in the morning (around 6 a.m.) to enjoy the soft light of sunrise and avoid many people.

However, you can also choose to visit this place during the rainy season, from November to March, but you should think about the higher chance of slippery paths and more changing weather. Either way, it's very important to get used to the high place in Cusco and bring the right things to deal with sudden changes in the weather.

Palccoyo Mountain

Even though Vinicunca is the most famous Colored Mountain in Cusco, Palccoyo has become a great choice for people looking for an easier walk with views that are just as amazing. This place offers a special experience with three colored mountains, an awesome stone forest, and fewer crowds so you can enjoy nature more peacefully.

Features of Palccoyo Mountain

Located at 4,900 meters above sea level, Palccoyo Mountain is a group of land shapes colored with natural colors from red and orange to green and yellow. These colors come from minerals like iron and sulfur rusting. Unlike its sister Vinicunca, Palccoyo is a less busy area, perfect for those who want a more relaxed time without the hard work of a long walk. Some of its main features are:

  • Instead of just one rainbow mountain like in Vinicunca, in Palccoyo you can see three colorful formations. This makes the view wider and lets you take more different pictures.
  • One of the biggest surprises in this place is the mysterious stone forest, a group of eroded rocks that look like natural sculptures.
  • Unlike the 7 colors mountain, where the walk can be hard, in Palccoyo the walk is much shorter and easier, taking about 40 to 50 minutes from where you start.
  • It is a great option for people looking for a quieter place with fewer tourists and more contact with nature.

Extra Fact: Many visitors think Palccoyo is the perfect choice to get used to the high altitude before trying to climb Vinicunca, because its altitude is similar but the effort needed is less.

Weather on Palccoyo Mountain

The weather in Palccoyo changes depending on the season and the time of day. Because it is very high up, the temperatures can be cold, especially early in the morning and at night. You can also visit it in these 2 seasons:

  • Dry season (May – September): This is the best time to visit Palccoyo, because the clear skies let you see the colors of the mountain without rain or fog getting in the way. During the day, the temperatures are usually between 5°C and 15°C, but they can go down to 0°C or lower early in the morning.
  • Rainy season (November – March): There is a higher chance of rain and fog, which can make the colors of the mountain look less bright.

Extra Fact: Unlike Vinicunca, where not having enough air can make the walk hard, in Palccoyo the walk is easier and the climb is shorter, so getting used to the high place is easier.

How to Get to Palccoyo?

Getting to Palccoyo is fairly easy and less hard than the way to Vinicunca. From the city of Cusco, you can go by car and then take a short walk to the mountain. The most common ways to get there are:

  • On your own: From Cusco, you need to take a ride to Checacupe, a small town about 3 hours away. From there, you continue by car for about 1 more hour to the starting point of the walk (the walk from this point to the mountain takes 40 to 50 minutes).
  • With a tour company: This is the easiest way to visit Palccoyo, because most tours include a ride, a guide, breakfast, and lunch. Also, the tours usually leave around 5 in the morning and go back to Cusco in the afternoon.

Pallay Punchu Mountain

Among the big land of Cusco, you can find Pallay Punchu Mountain. It's one of the most amazing and newest rock formations on the tourist path of the Colored Mountains. Unlike the famous Vinicunca Mountain and the easier Palccoyo, Pallay Punchu offers a hard but rewarding experience and a view like no other.

Its main thing is how it looks. It has pointy shapes that remind you of the folds of an Andean poncho. That's why it's called that in Quechua: "Pallay" (woven) and "Punchu" (poncho). Also, even though this mountain was only recently found as a place to visit, it has become very popular with travelers who want a place that is less crowded and more real in the Peruvian Andes.

Features of Pallay Punchu Mountain

Located at a height of 4,790 meters above sea level, in the Canas province, Layo district, Pallay Punchu shows colors and textures that are very different from other colored mountains in the area. Some of its most special things are:

  • Strong and bright colors: While Vinicunca and Palccoyo show stripes of colors on smooth hills, Pallay Punchu has more dramatic shapes, with red, orange, brown, yellow, and green colors that show the different minerals there, like iron, magnesium, and sulfur.
  • Unique rock shapes: Its sharp and pointy look makes it different from other colored mountains. These sharp ridges were formed over millions of years by the earth moving and wearing away, creating an amazing and special look.
  • Amazing wide views: From the top of Pallay Punchu, you can see the big Langui Layo lake, one of the biggest bodies of water on the high plains of Peru.
  • Less tourism and a more real experience: Unlike Vinicunca, where thousands of tourists arrive every day, Pallay Punchu is a place not many people visit. It's great for those who want a quieter experience, away from big crowds.
  • Challenging paths: The walk to the top is harder than the one to Palccoyo and about the as hard as the one to Vinicunca. It has steep parts and takes more effort because of the high place.

Extra Fact: Even though Pallay Punchu seems to have been found recently, really, its beauty was hidden under ice and snow for many centuries. With climate change and the melting of glaciers, its colors became visible, getting the attention of travelers and explorers.

Weather on Pallay Punchu Mountain

Because of its high place, the weather on Pallay Punchu is cold and changes a lot, with temperatures that can change very quickly in just a few hours. So, keep these 2 seasons in mind if you want to visit this mountain:

  • Dry Season (May to September): This is the best time to visit Pallay Punchu, with clear skies and more stable weather. During the day, temperatures are between 5°C and 15°C, but they can drop to -5°C in the early morning.
  • Rainy Season (November to March): There is more rain and fog, which can make the walk harder and make it harder to see the colors of the mountain.

How to Get to Pallay Punchu?

Pallay Punchu Mountain is about 4 and a half hours from Cusco, in the Canas province, Layo district. Just like Vinicunca and Palccoyo, the trip has a part by vehicle and a walk up, and you have 2 choices to visit it:

  • On your own: From Cusco, you take a bus to Sicuani (about 3 hours of travel). Once there, you need to take another ride to the Layo district (1 more hour of travel). After arriving in Layo, you start the walk to the mountain, which takes between 1.5 and 2 hours, depending on your speed and how used to the altitude you are.
  • With a tour operator: The best choice is to hire a tour from Cusco, as it includes direct transportation, a tour guide, breakfast, and lunch. Tours usually leave early in the morning (around 4:30 a.m.) and return to Cusco in the afternoon. The walk is hard, so it's important to be in good physical shape.
