General Information about Huayna Picchu

What is Huayna Picchu Mountain?

Huayna Picchu Mountain, or also called Wayna Picchu, is the famous high mountain seen in photographs of Machu Picchu – yes, the classic postcard photos. This peak rises to 2,693 meters (8,835 feet) and its access point is located on the north face of Machu Picchu.

Getting to the top will take you approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes to return via the same path. Inside the Machu Picchu mountain, there are the steep and narrow stairs known as the "stairs of death". You can also find terraces, temples, and enjoy the fantastic views that this incredible place offers.

According to local guides and historians, this peak was once the residence of a high priest responsible for astronomical observations. It was also the site of religious ceremonies where offerings were made to the local gods.

Location

Huayna Picchu mountain is located in the Andes mountain range, in the Cusco region (Peru), in South America. The mountain towers over the ancient Inca citadel of Machu Picchu, located in the province of Urubamba, about 80 kilometers northwest of the city of Cusco. The site is located within the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu and is part of the Vilcabamba mountain range.

Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu are located in the middle of a subtropical cloud forest at an altitude of about 2,430 meters (7,970 feet), while Huayna Picchu rises to 2,693 meters (8,835 feet). The Urubamba River flows under the mountain, winding through the deep canyon known as the Sacred Valley of the Incas.

How to find the entrance point to Huayna Picchu?

First you must reach the entrance gate to Machu Picchu. To do so, you must follow the Cusco – Ollantaytambo – Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu route.

From the entrance gate to Machu Picchu, take the lower path that surrounds the site in the direction of the ‘Sacred Rock’.

The entrance to Waynapicchu Mountain is clearly signposted at the control hut at the start of the trail.

The hike from the main gate of Machu Picchu to the start of the Huayna Picchu trail takes between 15 to 20 minutes.

What is the hike like?

At the trail control hut you will be asked for your name and your ID or passport number.

The Huayna Picchu trail follows a winding path of 15 to 20 minutes to a point where the trail splits into 2 routes.

The upper (short) trail will take you to the top of Huayna Picchu mountain.

The other (long) trail continues around the mountain to a large cavern inside which you can find the famous Temple of the Moon.

What is the difficulty like?

Short Trail – Moderate difficulty.

The short trail can be done by most people and only requires a reasonable physique.

The short trail takes 1 hour to climb, depending on the pace at which you ascend. The hike is permitted to people over 12 years old.

Full Trail – Challenging difficulty.

The full trail is more demanding. Not only because it takes more time but because the difficulty is greater due to the geography of the mountain.

The first section of the hike is along a descending path near ravines to the Temple of the Moon. Then you must ascend several steps and wooden stairs until you reach the top of Huaynapicchu.

When is the best time to go to the mountain?

Between November and March there is the rainy season, so it is more likely that fog will cover the mountain and it will not be possible to see the landscapes from the top.

From April to October there is the dry season. These days are the ideal time to climb Waynapicchu Mountain since it doesn't rain much and there is a better chance of seeing the landscapes from the top.

The entire Machu Picchu region has a subtropical climate. Average temperatures are around 18ºC.

Hiking early offers cooler temperatures, better shade from the sun and fewer people around. Therefore, it is a good idea to choose the first two entry times (Group 1 and Group 2).

Preparation before the hike

The southern region in Peru tends to have unpredictable weather. It can be hot and rainy at any moment. Therefore, the tourist who visits Huayna Picchu must be prepared for both rain and sun.

Most of the trail is on stone paths. For this reason, the use of hiking shoes is recommended.

It is also advisable to bring a rain poncho and sun protection.

People who are not used to hiking should climb at a leisurely pace. Seniors should consult with their doctor before hiking.

Checklist for the hike
